Improper lawncare can be dangerous for bicyclists

Pristine lawns are common in many areas of Los Angeles and its surrounding areas. Any individual who’s taking care of a lawn that adjoins a street should ensure that they’re handling grass clippings and other yard debris properly.

Many people don’t realize that grass clipping shouldn’t ever be blown into a roadway because they are hazardous to vehicles operating on two wheels. Bicyclists, for example, often have trouble maintaining proper control when they drive over clippings. Instead of blowing grass clippings toward the road, they should be blown toward the center of a yard. They can be collected in yard waste bags if a homeowner or business owner doesn’t want the clippings in their yard or on their property generally.

Why are grass clippings so dangerous?

Glass clippings can become slippery, especially when they get wet. Even a small bit of moisture, such as morning dew, increases the likelihood that a bicyclist will slip on the clippings. Because of the slipperiness of these clippings, bicyclists can lose control of their bicycle.

Bicyclists can fall off their bicycle, which can lead to injuries like road rash, head injuries, spinal cord damage, cuts, contusions or broken bones. The danger increases when there is traffic sharing the road with a bicyclist because of the risk of a vehicle running over a bicyclist who has slipped and fallen as a result of clippings.

A bicyclist who suffers from an injury after losing control on grass clippings should ensure that they seek immediate medical attention. They may opt to pursue a compensation claim for the financial damages they’ve suffered as a result of their crash. Because these cases might be complex, it’s often beneficial to work with a legal professional who is uniquely familiar with these matters.
