Bicycle Injury Law And
Advocacy Is What We Do

Oversized pick up trucks pose a high risk to bicyclists

Oversized pickup trucks are more common on roadways than ever, and their design features create serious hazards for people riding bicycles.

Longer hoods, wide A-pillars and elevated seating positions reduce a driver’s ability to see cyclists. Unfortunately, sightline limitations increase the risk of severe collisions, especially in dense urban areas where bicycles and vehicles share the same space.

Oversized trucks and visibility problems

Modern pickup trucks often have front ends that sit significantly higher than earlier models. This reduces forward visibility and creates large blind zones in front of the vehicle. Here is how contemporary designs raise crash risks:

  • High or long hoods hide cyclists who are close to the front bumper.
  • Wide support pillars block side views at intersections.
  • Elevated seating positions reduce awareness of nearby bicycles.
  • Extended truck widths limit space in narrow corridors.

These design features put pedestrians and bicyclists at a higher risk of dangerous collisions.

The numbers are disturbing

According to a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) review, more than 9,000 bicyclists and pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2024. The report also noted that fatalities involving SUVs increased by 120 percent from 2010 to 2021. These trends highlight how vehicle size and visibility limitations contribute to higher injury risks for vulnerable road users.

Steps that can reduce risk

Bicycle enthusiasts can improve safety by staying visible, avoiding close proximity to front ends and using caution when crossing in front of large vehicles. Riders should also approach intersections carefully because sightline limitations may prevent drivers from noticing nearby bicycles.

If it is too late and a bicycle accident has already caused injury, it is time to discover your legal options to pursue fair compensation for the harm suffered.
