Phase III of the Griffith Park Safety and Active Transportation Improvements Project is underway! It focuses on improving safety and active transportation along Crystal Springs Drive in Griffith Park. This includes installing speed humps, resurfacing asphalt, adding road markings, and creating pedestrian and bicycle lanes. Physical barriers like Jersey Barriers and delineators will be installed to separate vehicles from bicycle lanes.
The initiative was accelerated following the tragic death of a cyclist, Andrew Jelmert, in 2022, which highlighted the urgent need for safety improvements in Griffith Park.
The project has received widespread support from various stakeholders, including the Griffith Park Advisory Board, Friends of Griffith Park, and the organization Streets Are For Everyone, all of whom have emphasized the importance of enhancing safety and reducing vehicle traffic within the park.
The construction is expected to be completed in Fall 2024.
This project aims to make Griffith Park safer and more accessible for all users, including cyclists, pedestrians, and equestrians, while preserving the natural environment.
