Common injuries after a biking accident

Riding a bicycle is a great way to stay active and get around town, especially in nice weather. However, sharing the road with cars and trucks comes with serious risks.

When a vehicle hits a cyclist, the cyclist almost always takes the brunt of the impact. Understanding the physical toll of these accidents is the first step in protecting yourself and knowing what to do if a bike crash happens.

Injuries to watch out for after a biking accident

Because cyclists have very little protection compared to drivers, the injuries sustained in a crash are often severe and painful. The impact isn’t just from the vehicle; it is also from hitting the pavement. Here are common injuries after this incident:

  • Road rash: Sliding across asphalt tears the skin, often embedding debris and dirt into the wound. It is incredibly painful and carries a high risk of serious infection if not cleaned and treated professionally.
  • Fractures: When a cyclist falls, their instinct is often to put their hands out to break the fall. This frequently leads to broken wrists, arms and collarbones. Lower body fractures in the legs and hips are also common, depending on where the car strikes the bike.
  • Head injuries: Even with a high-quality helmet, the rider could still sustain traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). The brain can be shaken violently inside the skull, leading to long-term cognitive issues, dizziness and headaches.

It is important to remember that not all injuries are visible immediately. The shock and adrenaline from a crash can mask pain, making you feel “fine” when you might actually have more serious injuries.

Prioritize treatment when sustaining a bicycle injury

Your health is the single most important thing to focus on after a crash. Do not try to “walk it off.” You should seek medical attention immediately, either by taking an ambulance from the scene or visiting an urgent care center right away. A doctor can identify hidden injuries that might not be obvious.
