Bicycle Injury Law And
Advocacy Is What We Do

Are cyclists required to wear helmets in California?

California is a paradise for cyclists, offering everything from scenic coastal highways to bustling city bike lanes. With the beautiful weather, it is no surprise that so many people choose two wheels for their commute or exercise.

However, there is often confusion surrounding safety gear. Do you legally need to use a helmet every time you hop on a bike? Understanding the rules of the road is essential not just for avoiding a ticket, but for ensuring you make it to your destination safely.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Under California law, you have to wear a helmet if you are under 18 years old. You must wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet while riding on any public road, bike path or trail. This law applies whether you are operating the bike yourself or riding as a passenger.

For cyclists 18 and older, wearing a helmet is optional from a legal standpoint. However, just because it isn’t mandatory doesn’t mean it isn’t critical. Bicyclists in California share the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers, but they lack the physical protection of a car.

The statistics paint a grim picture of the risks involved: each year in the state, over 100 cyclists are killed and more than 10,000 are injured in collisions. While adults can go biking without a helmet, the high rate of biking accidents suggests that wearing a helmet is a smart choice.

Prioritize safety when on the road

Head injuries can change your life in an instant, and a helmet is the single most effective way to reduce that risk. Whether you are a daily commuter or a weekend warrior, protecting yourself should always be the priority.
