Bicycle Injury Law And
Advocacy Is What We Do

Is it better to ride single file or two abreast on a bike?

Trying to stay safe is an eternal battle for anyone who likes to ride a bicycle. One of the things that can affect this is how you position yourself when out riding with others on stretches of road where you share the lane with motorists.

You’ll often see cyclists riding two abreast, and you will also see them falling in behind each other and riding single file. Is there a right way to ride?

Both approaches to the issue can be valid

There are pros and cons to riding single file and two abreast, but both are legal in California. You need to pick the most appropriate option for the situation you are in.

  • Two abreast increases visibility. One person on a bicycle presents a narrow profile, whereas two present a wider profile, which is easier for drivers to spot.
  • Two abreast fills up more of the lane. It can reduce the chance that a driver tries to squeeze by in a place where it is inappropriate to do so. It helps reinforce that they should wait for a better place to overtake. On the flip side, some drivers become more aggravated when cyclists take up more of the lane, perhaps causing them to do something stupid.
  • Two abreast allows drivers to pass quickly once they start to overtake. Imagine a group of 30 club cyclists. It would take twice as long for a driver to overtake them if they were stretched out in single file, rather than concentrated across half the distance by riding two abreast.
  • Riding single file can sometimes make it easier for drivers to overtake. This is true where there is enough space in the lane to safely overtake. It can improve traffic flow and help avoid drivers becoming frustrated at being unable to pass, then making a dangerous overtake when their patience wears thin.

Drivers need to show patience, give you adequate space when passing and understand that you have as much right to be on the road as they do. Unfortunately, some do not, which may leave you injured and needing to claim compensation. If you’ve been hurt due to a driver’s negligence, legal guidance can be invaluable.
