Head injuries and brain injuries are always a possibility if you are involved in a bicycle accident. Wearing a helmet can certainly help. But if you get struck by a car, even the best helmet in the world does not guarantee that you will not have a TBI.
One important thing to do after such an accident is to keep an eye on your symptoms. With many head injuries, like a concussion, they will generally get better. You may experience sensitivity to lights and sounds, lost memories, irritability and mood swings, trouble with motor skills and other common TBI symptoms. But these should clear up as your brain heals and recovers.
If that does not happen and your symptoms instead start to get worse, it could indicate that you have a much more serious condition, like a subdural hematoma.
Why you need medical attention
The problem with some of these injuries is that they can get worse or even become fatal if you do not get proper medical attention. People sometimes want to put off going to the hospital, hoping the symptoms get better on their own, but that can be a significant risk.
To continue with the example of a subdural hematoma, what happens is that there is bleeding in the tissues around the brain. This means that pressure inside the skull builds up over time. If doctors can treat this, they can rectify the situation before it becomes too serious. But if it is untreated, the increasing pressure makes the symptoms worse and could even have fatal consequences.
If you were injured in a bicycle accident caused by another driver, then you need to know how to seek financial compensation for your medical bills, lost wages and other costs.
