Prevent fires when storing your e-bike

E-bikes have surged in popularity due to their convenience and eco-friendly nature.

It is important to practice proper care and maintenance to ensure safety and prevent fires, especially when storing them.

Choose the right storage location

NPR reports that since the start of 2021,  improper storage of batteries on mobility devices caused more than 200 fires. Selecting an appropriate storage location is the first step in preventing e-bike fires. Avoid storing your e-bike in areas prone to extreme temperatures, such as direct sunlight or freezing cold. Opt for a cool, dry place away from flammable materials like gasoline, propane tanks or chemicals.

Disconnect the battery

Before storing your e-bike, always disconnect the battery from the bike. Lithium-ion batteries can pose a fire risk if they malfunction or overheat.

Store the battery properly

When not in use, store the battery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid leaving the battery fully charged for extended periods, as this can increase the risk of overheating. Store the battery at around 50% charge to prolong its lifespan and minimize fire hazards.

Regularly inspect your e-bike

Performing regular inspections of your e-bike can help identify potential fire hazards before they escalate. Check for loose or damaged wiring, corroded connectors or any unusual odors emanating from the bike. Promptly address any issues you find.

Use a quality charger

When charging your e-bike battery, always use the manufacturer-recommended charger. Using third-party chargers or chargers not designed for your specific e-bike model can pose a fire risk due to incompatible voltage or current levels.

Implement fire safety measures

In case of a fire emergency, it is important to have proper fire safety measures in place. Equip your storage area with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers rated for electrical fires. Develop an evacuation plan and ensure everyone in your household is familiar with it.

E-bikes are handy vehicles to have. Like any other form of transportation, it is important to exercise precautions for the sake of safety.
