Tips for riding your bicycle safely after dark

Bicycles have gained popularity in recent years as more people seek to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the environment. Unfortunately, many are unfamiliar with some of the risks associated with bicycle travel, especially when riding at night.

Reduce your risk of an accident with these tips for riding safely after dark.

Invest in reflectors

Reflective clothing is a necessity on a bicycle after dark. Vehicle headlights and even ambient street lighting can trigger reflective strips on your clothing, making you more visible. In addition, white reflectors placed on your bicycle’s tires and frame can improve visibility.

Install bicycle lighting

You can find many different bicycle lights, including front headlight designs, perimeter lights and marker lights that help increase the visibility of the boundaries of your bicycle as well as your visibility ahead of you. When riding at night, headlight assemblies are key for protecting you from drifting into traffic lanes and helping you avoid obstructions.

Avoid unknown areas

While it may not always be possible to avoid unfamiliar areas when you ride at night, try doing so as much as possible. Navigation at night is more difficult because of the low visibility, making even familiar areas seem different. Traveling in unfamiliar areas puts you at greater risk of accidents.

Bicyclists may suffer severe injuries from an accident with a motor vehicle. Take every possible step to protect yourself and stay safe on the road, especially when driving at night. Low light and limited visibility increase your risk of injuries.
