Bicycle Injury Law And
Advocacy Is What We Do

How are head injuries treated?

Riding a bicycle is great for your health and wellness. However, cyclists also face quite a few risks on the road, including a risk of head injuries.

While bicycle helmets are a must when riding, a serious accident may still result in a moderate to severe head injury. In this case, it is important to understand the common treatment options and how medical staff can assist in the recovery process. Here are a few possible treatments to consider.

Surgical procedures

Emergency assistance is often required for major head injuries. In this case, medical staff may need to perform a surgical procedure to repair damage. For instance, a skull fracture will require a procedure to mend broken bone tissue. In the event of brain swelling, which can be extremely dangerous, surgeons will need to relieve the pressure. Surgery can also remove blood clots from the brain to prevent major complications.

Medication

Doctors can also treat brain swelling using medication that increases the rate at which a body gets rid of fluids, which are diuretics. If the injury entails a seizure risk, you may also receive anti-seizure medication. Most people take these medications for a week or so after their initial injury. When effects are severe and damage to the blood vessels is an issue, doctors can use coma-inducing medicines to limit how much oxygen a brain needs to function.

Physical Rehabilitation

Serious injuries can also require ongoing rehab to restore bodily functions. For instance, physical therapy helps build up muscle strength, while vocational therapy teaches a person how to adjust to new physical limitations. If communication problems have resulted from the injury, you may also receive speech therapy.

Some people can make a full recovery from brain trauma, while others may need regular assistance going forward. By getting the right treatment, you will increase the chance of a full recovery.
