4 safety-enhancing bicycle accessories

As a Southern California biker, you know how liberating it is to hit the road on your bike. Sometimes, you can feel your worry melt away with each rotation of your bicycle tires.

While inherently peaceful and enjoyable, biking also has a dangerous side. Here are four safety-enhancing bicycle accessories to consider incorporating into your next ride.

1. Reflective gear

Reflective gear, such as jackets, vests, gloves, backpacks, shoes or reflective tape can dramatically increase your visibility in the dark. Consider these reflective additions if you ride early in the morning or at night.

2. Bright clothing and accessories

The CDC recommends wearing bright-colored clothing when you ride to make you more visible to drivers, other bikers and pedestrians. Avoid wearing dark colors, especially at night, as they can make it exceedingly difficult for others to see you.

3. Bike lights

Adding lights to your bicycle can increase others’ ability to see you. Try to find white lights for the front of the bike and red lights for the rear, similar to a vehicle’s head and tail lights.

4. Helmet

A properly fitting helmet is one of the most valuable biking accessories. Studies show that helmets reduce the risk of head and brain injury in a crash. Wearing a helmet may not seem ideal, but if you find one that fits just right, you should remain comfortable for your entire ride.

These four bicycle accessories may enhance your safety and peace of mind if you bring them along the next time you hit the road.
