Mechanical problems that can lead to a bike accident

If you ride your bike often, you must understand the risks. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported that in 2020 alone, about 39,000 bicyclists sustained injuries due to an accident in the United States. While these accidents are often because of negligent motorists, a simple mechanical failure could make matters worse for you.

Here are some mechanical problems that can lead to dangerous bike accidents.

Pedal crank issues

Pedal cranks connect your bike’s frame to the foot pedals. A crankset is usually steel, and over time, it can corrode and fail. It can be impossible to pedal if your cranks give out, so you should always check them before riding.

Flat tires

Bike accidents are more likely to happen when one of your tires is under-inflated. You should check and adjust your tire pressure often, as the temperature and terrain can greatly affect it. If you get a flat while riding, you should get off the road as soon as possible and change the tire.

Bad chain

The chain is one of the most important parts of a bike. If it fails while you are riding, it could cause you to lose control and crash into a car or other obstacle. It is a good idea to replace the chain if it is rusting or looks worn out. You should also regularly clean and lubricate your chain to help extend its life.

No matter what type of bike you have, you must look out for mechanical failure areas. If you notice anything wrong, have a mechanic check it out to make sure that your bike is safe to ride.
