Advocacy Is What We Do

How bicycle advocacy groups are working to make a difference

California is a state that is extremely popular with cyclists. With great weather year-round, it is easy for people to commute and exercise via bikes.

Advocacy groups play an important role for cyclists, as they focus on a variety of aspects that relate to bike lovers. For example, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition works to make LA a convenient, safe and fun place for cyclists. This organization, as well as other organizations throughout the state, use innovative approaches to achieve its goals.

Improving street safety

One of the main focuses of the California Bicycle Coalition, as with many of the advocacy groups, is to improve safety for cyclists. However, there are different approaches used to achieve each organization’s goal. Two focuses include direct action and data.

Protecting children

Under the theme of safety, some organizations advocate for child-friendly streets. This includes working to make some areas of cities free of cars so that kids and adults can bike, walk, run and skate safely without the interference of other drivers.

Supporting like-minded candidates

One advocacy organization, based in Los Angeles, has a more political focus. It seeks out, endorses and encourages votes for candidates that care about issues regarding transportation and bike safety. For the legislative session of 2022, the group supports 19 bills, including the Plan for the Future Bill.

Bringing communities together

Another focus of many organizations is to connect communities and bring neighborhoods together. This not only means connecting cyclists to one another but also connecting established and new activist groups so they can learn from each other, work together and be a stronger influence.
