Reasons why a recumbent bike keeps you safe

If you have been mulling over the idea of riding a recumbent bike, one thing you may have been considering is just how safe you would be on the road. Does this type of relaxed ride offer any safety advantages over a traditional bike?

It may. They are certainly at least as safe as a traditional bike.

Some experts suggest that your lower center of gravity, along with the way your weight is positioned on the recumbent bike, may even keep you safer. It’s harder to tip over and crash the bike on your own. It’s more likely to stay upright if you have to take evasive action to avoid a dangerous driver. Since your weight is on top of the back wheel, it is also common for this type of bike to come to a stop more quickly than a traditional bike.

You also want to consider how visible you are. A recumbent is lower, but it also gives you a larger profile and a larger silhouette. It’s easier for drivers to see you, and you stand out on the road. When you throw in the fact that a recumbent bike is far less common, and therefore, more likely to draw attention, it means that drivers may be more aware of your position on the road with them. Since many accidents happen when drivers just do not see cyclists, this can make an accident less likely.

No matter what type of bike you ride, though, you do still face risks. If you get injured, you may have a right to financial compensation.
