Bicycle safety tips for Southern California riders

Riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get in shape. It’s also a great alternative to using a car to get to and from school, work and the store. Biking is a popular hobby in Southern California because of the heavily congested roads. Biking can also be very dangerous if you don’t know how to protect yourself. Here are some important bicycling safety tips for you to follow.

Whenever riding on a road you should always ride with the flow of traffic. Never ride against traffic. This makes making turns and other maneuvers with your bicycle very dangerous. Bicycles are considered vehicles of the road even though they don’t have motors, which means they must follow the rules and laws of the road at all times. This includes stopping at stop signs, red lights and yielding to pedestrians where required.

If there are marked bike lanes available, use them. Do not ride outside of a marked bike lane and in a lane of vehicular travel. This is illegal and can be very dangerous. Avoid riding on sidewalks as much as possible, too.

Riding your bicycle on a highway, interstate, expressway and other major roadways is illegal and very dangerous. Do not ride your bikes on these roads at any point during the day or night.

Always wear a helmet and any other safety gear you believe will protect your body should you get into an accident. It’s best to put an LED blinking white light on the front of your bike and a red one on the back of your bike. This helps motor vehicle drivers spot you at all times of the day.

Have you been injured in a bicycle accident in Southern California? It’s best to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney who focuses on bicycle accidents and protecting those who ride on two wheels.
